Resveratrol, a naturally occurring polyphenol markedly lowers the levels of secreted and intracellular amyloid peptides produced from different cell lines. Resveratrol does not inhibit Aß production. Instead it promotes intracellular degradation of Aß via a mechanism that involves the proteasome.

The resveratrol induced decrease of Aß could be prevented by several selective proteasome inhibitors and by siRNA-directed silencing of the proteasome subunit ß5. These findings demonstrate a proteasome-dependent anti-amyloidogenic activity of resveratrol and suggest that this natural compound has a therapeutic potential in Alzheimer’s disease.

In other words resveratrol is certainly being considered as a treatment for Alzheimer’s.

New research shows resveratrol, lowers levels of the amyloid-beta peptides that cause the plaques in the brain leading to Alzheimer’s disease.

It may very well help to explain the extensive amount of epidemiological evidence linking the consumption of red wine to a lower dementia risk.

In a recent issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, Philippe Marambaud and his research colleagues working from the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders in Manhasset, New York, discussed adding quantities of resveratrol to cells that can produce human amyloid-beta.

They discovered levels of amyloid-beta in the treated cells were less than those in untreated cells.

The presence of quantities of amyloid-beta peptides in the brain is a characteristic features of Alzheimer’s disease.

Although resveratrol is naturally found in several plants, including grapes, Dr Marambaud did say these small concentrations would be unlikely to be sufficient to meet the effect seen in his study.

Dr Marambaud also made comment that grapes and wine did however contain more than 600 different components, including significant antioxidant molecules. It therefore suggests we cannot exclude the possibility that several compounds work together with small amounts of resveratrol to slow down the progression of the neurodegenerative process in humans.”

Dr Marambaud and his fellow researchers are now attempting to explain how resveratrol exerts its effects, so they may duplicate and develop similar compounds to use in new drugs for a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease.

The researchers believe that resveratrol acts by stimulating the degradation of amyloid-beta peptides by the proteasome, a barrel-shaped multi-protein complex that can specifically digest proteins into short polypeptides and amino acids.

There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease at the moment but I feel we are making ground on it.

I wish there was one. I lost my father in law to it only very recently so I am fully aware of the devastation this insidious disease can have on people and their family and friends. The current treatment for Alzheimer’s is solely, “Care Treatment” with little able to be done to improve the effects of the disease on the patient.

If we did have a window opening for a possible new treatment for Alzheimer’s then I think it may very well be resveratrol. I know my wife and for the other members of her family they are looking to resveratrol for themselves as a possible prevention. The Story

Prior to using resveratrol for health benefits I weighed in at an impressive 65kg.

Yes you are correct.

At that weight I really didn’t need additional body fat loss. I didn’t take resveratrol for a weight loss solutions even though I had myself a nice little “Pot Belly” due to my advancing years and healthy appetite for yummy stuff.

After 3 months I had lost 3.5kg, and my belly had retreated by a splendid two belt holes…….very cool.

Everyone has a gene in them called SIRT1.

Resveratrol as a Super Antioxidant is known to activate the SiRT1 gene in mammals.  SiRT1 works by activating a fight response within our cells.  We already know from studying calorie restriction diets that a decreased intake of calories causes SiRT1 to activate. This will in turn break down stored fat and increasing energy levels.

Arguably, the reason resveratrol is reputed to promote safe weight loss is the fact any activation of SIRT1 makes your metabolic system more efficient.

In humans with naturally higher expressions of SIRT1, scientists have proven they experience faster metabolisms, suggesting that a natural SIRT1-booster like resveratrol could cause the metabolism to work at an even higher rate. Metabolism is the key.

Resveratrol is also believed to aid body fat loss as an appetite suppresser, due to its high antioxidant content.

Dr. David Sinclair at Harvard published a landmark study in the journal “Nature” which showed that not only did resveratrol contribute to an increase in the life span of obese mice but also protected against the medical conditions of obesity.

Dr Sinclair also reported that his study group of mice that had taken resveratrol did not show signs of insulin resistance or develop fatty livers. They also had a longer, healthier, and more active life than the other group which wasn’t on resveratrol.

Researchers at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in Illkirch, France have found Resveratrol boosts the exercise capacity of muscles in mice and protects against diet-induced insulin resistance and obesity.

In another study, a scientist named Johan Auwerx, at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in France, reported that large quantities of resveratrol were administered to mice that were fed a high fat diet, and they did not gain weight or develop metabolic syndrome. He also found that Resveratrol increased the body temperature and consumption of calories by the subjects even at rest.

Auwerx felt these same results would be seen in humans, as he found an increase in the mitochondria levels in the muscle cells of the mice that consumed the resveratrol. Mitochondria are part of the cells that create energy, and an increase in mitochondria meant the mice were able to burn more calories and avoid weight gain.

And finally, resveratrol is believed to suppress estrogen. Estrogen, when it is suppressed can decrease body fat and it can also increase muscle mass. This is another reason how resveratrol supplements can provide safe weight loss solutions.

My Recommendation

This has been a lengthy article but it a very important subject and deserves time and attention to it.

Let me say right from the start – there is  NO EXACT Resveratrol dosage

Sorry about that but it is a typical answer when you start talking about health products that have been produced to meet the varying needs of it’s consumer. It’s not the same as taking a headache tablet if you have a headache.

Let me explain what I mean by saying there is no exact resveratrol dosage.

Research so far tells us Resveratrol can be used to address a number of health benefits:

• weight loss
• heart disease
• diabetes
• cancer
• insomnia
• arthritis
• anti aging
• reduce cholesterol
• life vitamin
• energy booster
• skin issues

and the list goes on as we find out more about it.

The resveratrol dosage can also depend on whether you are treating a pre-existing condition or trying to prevent something from happening. Many specialists would recommend a much higher resveratrol dose when treating a pre-existing condition verses a prevention.

To add to this would be the Purity percentage of the product you are using. You can purchase varying degrees of resveratrol in terms of it’s purity, ranging from 5% to 99%.

Resveratrol dosage is a very individual choice however some believe it depends on your weight, metabolism, and individual body chemistry. Weight is easy enough to measure but metabolism and body chemistry is a bit more difficult, or in fact, impossible to measure.

I am a believer in the weight rule of thumb because it is the only true measurable.

Therefore, using the weight measure solution, it is suggested you take a resveratrol dosage in proportion to your morning weight. For example a 90kg (14 stone) person should take roughly twice as much as a 45kg (7 stone) person, all other things being the same.

As part of a daily preventative regimen the average adult (i.e. 70kg, 11 stone.) should consider approximately 500mg per day. This equates to about USD$0.72 per day using the Jing Tea Resveratrol for a supplement which has an extraordinarily wide range of benefits.

If, however, you are treating a pre-existing condition many specialists would recommend a much higher resveratrol dosage, say at least 4 times the preventative resveratrol dose.

I have seen some recommendations of 20-30mg per day but I just cannot come to terms with such a low resveratrol dosage I am afraid. I do not see a great deal of benefit from taking such a low resveratrol dose.

The other thing I would keep in mind is that resveratrol is best absorbed through the skin and not the stomach. To increase absorption in this manner you can try it orally in powder form within the mouth [open capsules] and let it be absorbed that way or mixed in liquid and sipped during an extended period. I would steer clear of the tablet variety as much of this is wasted within the stomach.

Alternatively you could enhance absorption by mixing it into some form of liquid or emulsifiers including, Lecithins, palm oils, rapeseed oils, soy bean oils, sunflower oils. Using chocolate and HPMC has good results too. You can also mix the micronized powder in a Whey protein isolate shake, as it binds to the Beta-lactoglobulin protein in Whey and this increases it’s solubility.

Personally, I use the capsules and drink them with water, first thing in the day. Works for me.

Always be aware of the possible resveratrol side effects as well. I do cover them in my article so take the time to read and make yourself feel comfortable with as much information as possible.

Should you experience any, then cease or reduce your current resveratrol dosage level depending on the reaction.

Most of the time I look at anything to do with an Anti Aging Treatment it is usually directed towards some kind of skin treatment using a cream of some kind. Some are so extreme they include surgery and injections.

You have heard of the “French Paradox” haven’t you?

Interest in the health benefits of resveratrol originates from the “French Paradox”, which is a theory that explains the low incidences of cardiovascular diseases in Europe mainly focused in the Mediterranean area.

Despite consuming a diet containing plenty of fat, the Mediterranean inhabitants’ propensity for gorging themselves on generous amounts of red wine has a lot to do with this lack of cardiovascular disease. The increased resveratrol  intake [contained in red wine] is helping these people live longer and healthier lives. The Ancient Romans had the same secret weapon they used in the fight to stay young and healthy. They had no idea of course about resveratrol and it’s perceived benefits as an anti aging treatment.

A few decades ago, scientists discovered this “French Paradox” effect. Why was it the French had significantly lower rates of heart disease and cardiac arrest than the rest of Western culture. Well, thanks to research into resveratrol and the development of resveratrol supplements like those I take from the Jing Tea Health Centre , we can all benefit in the same manner.

Back To The 21st Century

We are now moving quickly through time from Romans to Yeast. 

Just recently scientists noticed that feeding Resveratrol to yeast lengthened their lives by approximately 70%.  Moving quickly up the food chain in their experiments, they found a recurring theme. Resveratrol extended lifespan. Our first hint at life extension vitamins being considered as a possible anti aging treatment.

Finally in November 2006, a study headed by Dr David Sinclair and released by Harvard Medical School published the results  conducted on mice. Amazingly the average lifespan of the mice in question had increased by 30%.

It was despite the fact resveratrol was introduced to the mice during mid-life. Overfed mice were studied in detail, and again surprisingly was the fact Resveratrol virtually eliminated the majority of other illnesses unique to the obese mouse control group.

So in “Scientific Terms” what does all this mean?

Caloric Restriction and SIRT1 Activation Caloric Restriction (CR) – severe limitation of food intake – has long been known
to dramatically increase the lifespan of every animal scientists have tried it on.  Research reveals it can push lifespan out by up to 55% in mice.

Even mice beginning Caloric Restriction[CR] late in life, have their lives extended by up to 35%.  Dr David Sinclair has shown that a gene called Sirt1 is turned on by a Caloric Restricted [CR] diet, and that it is also turned on by Resveratrol.

It’s about now I experienced my “Ah Ha” moment. Did You?

If it extends life, then is this not another way of saying it fights the onset of age……..an anti aging treatment from the inside.

Incredibly no other known molecule has this ability. Dr Sinclair has more than clearly demonstrated in mice that when the Sirt1 gene is activated, lifespan is increased as a direct result, but Caloric Restricted does not increase it any further. Conversely, knocking out the Sirt1 gene eliminated any beneficial effect of Caloric Restricted.

The evidence is very convincing at this point that Resveratrol may be Caloric Restricted in a capsule.

In a world wide publicized report, scientists at Harvard Medical School and BIOMOL Laboratories demonstrated resveratrol activates a “longevity gene” by activating a cell’s survival defense enzyme, which prolongs the time, cells have to repair their broken DNA.

A well known cause of aging and death is the fact that older cells lose their ability to replicate perfect DNA in new cells. DNA “mistakes” accumulate and over time allow pieces of DNA to become active and print themselves out, creating a form of “DNA debris” that eventually stops a cell from functioning properly.

Resveratrol reduces the frequency of “DNA debris” by up to 60% through the longevity gene that is stimulated.

This is hugely significant.

What Does All This Mean?

Resveratrol acts as an anti aging treatment. It is the best anti aging treatment we know of at this time.

Life Vitamins………Is it a throw away term or does it really have some real value to it.
