The latest news is, Prostate Cancer is killing more men than Breast Cancer is killing women. Not that there is a competition, but this is a bit out of control isn’t it.
Very rarely do we hear of any media news talking up new cancer alternatives. Not until now however.

We are always looking for cancer alternatives…..we are well overdue……and we may have found a prostate treatment and at the same time an alternative breast cancer treatment.
Those researchers at the front of these discoveries are certainly not saying they have a prostate cancer cure or breast cancer cure, but the results are very promising so far.

Resveratrol Verses Cancer – The Fight Is On
Arguably cancer is the most dynamic area of resveratrol research.
Most studies of resveratrol’s ability to fight cancer have taken place in test tubes and have involved its use primarily on animal and human cell lines. This is not unusual.
Resveratrol is reported to be the first natural supplement to have credible evidence in existence, revealing it can block or stop many stages of cancer. Early reports strongly suggest resveratrol not only prevents cancer, it’s being recommended as an additional treatment and as one of the better cancer alternatives.
Various Scientific Studies From All Over The World
Over the past 3 years the number of studies has increased significantly revealing more and more about this polyphenol [Super Antioxident] with each report. Resveratrol is a broad spectrum agent that stops cancer in many diverse ways, from blocking estrogen and androgens to modulating genes.
Much of the latest information shows resveratrol causes a unique type of cell death, and kills cancer cells whether they have the tumor suppressor gene or not. It also works whether cancer cells are estrogen receptor positive or negative.
Researchers are also beginning to uncover the ability of resveratrol supplements to augment other chemotherapies. For example, vitamin D3 converts to a steroid that inhibits the growth of breast cancer cells.
Other research shows that it causes drug-resistant non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer cells to become susceptible to chemotherapeutic drugs [Gemcetabine, Navelbine, cisplatinum, Paclitaxel, and Trial].
Scientific research has established one way resveratrol fights cancer, is by causing cancerous cells to destroy themselves. This “cell suicide” occurs because resveratrol inhibits the activity of a protein called nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB), which helps to nourish cancer cells and thus promote their development and survival.
Researchers from Austria, have completed elaborate studies showing resveratrol blocks the ability of cancer cells to metastasize [spread through the body] to bone by between 30-71%. The best results were for pancreas, breast, and renal cancer with prostate and colon cancers also inhibited, but not as much.
This finding is significant. We are talking serious cancer alternatives here.
In a study from Japan, resveratrol in an amount easily obtained by supplementation, inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells, and blocked the growth-promoting effects of linoleic acid from the Western diet.
Resveratrol is reported to be effective against a wide range of cancers, both at the preventive and treatment stages.
Its ability to stop cancer is connected to its capability, first, to distinguish a cancer cell from a normal cell.
Unlike chemotherapeutic drugs, resveratrol does not damage healthy cells. Not only is it not harmful to normal cells, it protects them. Resveratrol is sophisticated in its actions because it doesn’t only just scavenge free radicals it also activates and deactivates critical enzymes and genes, hormones and chemicals.
The more I research resveratrol, the more I believe it looks like one of the few cancer alternatives available.
Resveratrol and Breast Cancer
Estrogen is the driving force behind many cases of breast cancer, and one study has found that resveratrol may put the brakes on its action.
The University of Nebraska researchers found resveratrol reduced the ability of estrogen to transform into substances that usually interact with DNA in breast cells and trigger the development of tumors. Resveratrol may prevent the initial step that occurs when estrogen begins the process that results in the development of breast cancer cells.
In a March 2009 article in “Experimental and Molecular Medicine”, scientists reported resveratrol was effective against the proliferation of human breast and pancreatic cancer cells.
It is also reported that resveratrol inhibited the invasion and migration of breast cancer cells. This was an important finding because metastasis [the spread of cancer beyond its starting point] is a main cause of death from breast cancer.
Should we be bold enough to say resveratrol will prevent breast cancer. Perhaps in time, but the sign are promising and for me it is certainly looking good as one of the better cancer alternatives we can try.
Resveratrol and Prostate Cancer
Research is not saying resveratrol is a prostate cancer cure but it is certainly working towards prostrate cancer treatment options.
Resveratrol is in a fight against prostate cancer as well and in a study published in June 2008 in “Carcinogenesis”, researchers found it helped retard the growth and proliferation of human prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo [in vitro is experimentation using a whole, living organism as opposed to a partial or dead organism, or an in vitro or controlled environment]. In an earlier study scientists also confirmed resveratrol increased prostate cancer cell death, and as a result could be a genuine contender as one of the better cancer alternatives available.
Prostate cancer treatment options are limited but what we may very well have here is a true alternative.
The results of a study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham using male mice, showed that the risk of developing prostate tumors decreased by 87 percent when the mice were fed resveratrol. The treated mice also showed no harm to their systems from ingesting resveratrol. The lack of toxicity in resveratrol use is very promising.
The experiment used 82 mice in total, with 53 mice acting as a control group and the remaining 29 mice ingested 625 mg per kg of body weight each day. The mice were also fed their regular diet during the test period. The amount of resveratrol used on the mice in the experiment would be the equivalent to the amount present in one bottle of red wine.
The control group had a 23 percent incidence of prostate cancer, where the group eating resveratrol had an incidence of only three percent. This result is equivalent to an 87 percent reduction in cancer.
As I said initially this is not evidence of a prostate cancer cure but it looks like we are heading in the right direction as one of the preferred cancer alternatives.

Resveratrol and Other Cancers
In a University of Barcelona study, resveratrol prevented cell proliferation and promoted the death of colon cancer cells. These findings are similar to those documented by investigators at the Medical University of Vienna.
Resveratrol has been found to inhibit the proliferation of a variety of human cancer cell lines, including those from breast, prostate, stomach, colon, pancreatic, and thyroid cancers.
In animal models, oral administration of resveratrol inhibited the development of esophageal, intestinal , and mammary (breast) cancer induced by chemical carcinogens.
