Antioxidant Supplements

Antioxidant Supplements

Antioxidant supplements have been the rage for many years now and the more information we find out about their enormous health benefits encourages us to do more and more research.

What are Antioxidants And How Are They Good For Us?

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation [or mutation] of other molecules.

This Oxidation, or mutation, is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons  from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radical cell damage. In turn, these free radicals can start chain reactions that mutate other cells which in turn converts them to free radicals also.

When these mutated free radical cells group in large numbers they are called Cancer. I talk more about resveratrol and cancer in my article on Cancer Alternatives.

Every day you are constantly exposed to the harmful effects of free-radical damage in your body. Your body is composed of billions of molecular cells held together by electronic bonds. When a molecule loses one of its electron pairs it becomes unstable… what we call a free-radical.

These free-radicals will attempt to replace their lost electron by attacking nearby healthy – equal electron-paired – molecules. As they attack, they transform healthy molecules into more free-radicals which results in a chain-reaction called oxidative stress, which can damage a million or more adjacent molecules.

This oxidative process is the literal decay of otherwise healthy tissue!

Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions. They do this by being oxidized themselves, so antioxidants are often reducing agents such as thiols, ascorbic acid or polyphenols.

In our general environment, we see evidence of oxidation at work in the form of, rusting pieces of metal, fruits and vegetables exposed to the air are quickly spoiled and even that old tyre left outside in the elements, becomes brittle after a time.

Free Radical Cell Damage

The effect of free radical cell damage in our bodies is seen in the following forms:

  • Cancer
  • Skin wrinkles and discolouration
  • Coranary Heart Disease
  • Arthritis
  • Formation of eye cataracts
  • Phlebitis, edema and leg swelling
  • Diabetes
  • Stress-related conditions
  • Premature Aging
  • Dementia and ALzheimers

An ample supply of super antioxidents or antioxidant supplements to stabilize and eliminate free radical cell damage is exactly what we need everyday in our diet to keep a healthy immune system.

They are nature’s way of fighting off potentially dangerous free radicals in the bloodstream. These free radicals develop as a result of the body being in contact with many carcinogenic and synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, plastics, cigarette smoke, chlorine byproducts pollution, preservatives, heavy metals, UV radiation and stress.

Studies from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Aging, John Hopkins University and the American Heart Association, found that antioxidants from fruits, vegetables and other natural plants have hundreds of protective nutrients. Nutrients which can protect your body from the free-radicals that enter your body and destroy your cells and tissues.

Super Antioxidents have the highest ORAC Value [antioxidant power]. Antioxidants are substances such as vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and polyphenols [contained in resveratrol supplements] that help protect cells in your body. Resveratrol for example is very rich in antioxidants.

ORAC value is the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity of food. ORAC provides us with a method of measuring the overall antioxidant power (activity) of different foods and supplements and give it a number.

This method of measurement was developed by the scientists at the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Benefits Of Antioxidants

Antioxidants and Antioxidant supplements are well documented in the research of Dr. Richard Passwater, Dr. Jacques Masquelier, Dr. Morton Walker, the Pasteur & Huntington Institutes and seven other leading Universities in Europe, to be helpful in alleviating many conditions including the following:

  • Improves Circulation
  • Decreases Hemorrhoid
  • Strengthens Arteries and Veins
  • Fights Inflammation in Arthritis
  • Reduces Risk of Cancer
  • Aids Sports Injury Healing
  • Reduces Risk of Stroke
  • Reduces Eczema
  • Reduces Risk of Vascular Disease
  • Enhances Immune Resistance
  • Reduces Blood Pressure
  • Subdues Allergic Reactions
  • Helps Asthma/Bronchitis
  • Reduces Diabetic Retinopathy
  • Reduces Arthritis Pain
  • Lowers Cholesterol

Dr David Sinclair

A recent study on resveratrol, conducted at Harvard University by Dr David Sinclair,  showed the antioxidant to have impressive properties.

According to his teams research, resveratrol showed unprecedented promise as possibly being the most powerful super antioxident ever discovered. Researchers concluded that the molecule has extended life spans in virtually every study done to date, and on a wide variety of organisms.

Much work has gone into developing resveratrol antioxidant supplements including Pure Trans Resveratrol which is detailed in articles within this site. Resveratrol antioxidant supplements are extremely rich in antioxidants hence their health rejuvenation reputation.

Antioxidants can be vitamins, minerals or enzymes, and they exist in foods and certain antioxidant supplements. Many people in the world do not eat healthy diets, ones that include fruits, vegetables and other whole foods, but instead eat diets rich in processed fast foods.

Many of us are seriously lacking in a diet rich in antioxidants hence the need to develop more and more antioxidant supplements in an effort to balance these bad eating habits.

Your Call To Action

It is not just a matter of eating correctly to maintain a good balance of super antioxidents in our systems. We must add to the normal intake through good food to balance out the increasing “Nasties” our bodies are confronted with each and every day.

We are all exposed to a myriad of chemicals and carcinogenic’s every day, which cause free radical cell damage.  There is no escape from it as it is the modern society we live in and therefore we must take preventative and protective action to defend against such foes.

Your call to action is a simple one.

Use the purist form of antioxidant supplements you can find. I have and you can read how my body has benefited from them in my About Peter Castledine page.
